Shift 2: The Portion Precision Cut (expected reduction: 0.5–1.0 mmol/L)
The problem: Even with a better carb source, eyeballing portions adds 10–15g of carbs you didn't plan for. One "cup" of rice scooped loosely is often 1.3 cups. One "medium" potato is often a large.
The shift: For one week, measure your dinner starch with an actual measuring cup or a food scale. Weigh the cooked starch — aim for a portion that delivers exactly 30g of carbohydrates. For reference:
- ⅓ cup cooked white rice = ~15g carbs
- ½ cup cooked pasta = ~22g carbs

The problem: Your dinner plate has protein and carbs but minimal added fat. The conventional "low-fat is healthy" instinct works against you in GD — fat slows carb absorption, and removing it from a meal lets glucose spike faster.
The shift: Add one visible fat source to your dinner plate. This isn't about adding extra calories for fun — it's about slowing down the glucose curve. Options:
- ½ avocado (~7g fat, 2g net carbs) — slice it onto the plate alongside your protein
- 1 tbsp olive oil drizzled over roasted vegetables (~14g fat, 0g carbs)
- 1 oz cheese melted over the protein or salad (~9g fat, 0–1g carbs)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter or almond butter in an Asian-style sauce (~16g fat, 4g carbs)
- 10–12 almonds or walnuts (~14g fat, 2–3g net carbs) as a side or tossed into a salad
The worked example: Plain grilled chicken breast + ⅓ cup rice + steamed broccoli produces a faster glucose curve than the same plate with ½ avocado and olive-oil-roasted broccoli. Same carbs. Same protein. The fat changes the absorption speed enough to shave 0.3–0.7 mmol/L off the 2-hour reading.

Shift 5: The Post-Dinner Walk Protocol (expected reduction: 0.5–1.0 mmol/L)
The problem: You eat dinner, sit on the couch, and test at 2 hours. Your muscles — the biggest glucose disposal system in your body — are idle during the exact window when your blood sugar needs the most help.
The shift: Walk for 15–20 minutes starting 10–15 minutes after your last bite. Not a power walk — a normal, comfortable pace. Around the block, on a treadmill, around your house if the weather's bad. The goal is upright movement, not exercise intensity.
Why this works: Skeletal muscle contractions pull glucose out of the blood independently of insulin. Week 1–2: Implement shifts 1–3. Test every dinner at 2 hours. Log numbers.
If still above 6.7 mmol/L on >50% of dinners after 2 weeks: Add shifts 4–5. Continue testing.

What About Bedtime? Your Fasting Number Matters Too
If your 2-hour dinner readings are high, check your fasting number the next morning. The two are connected: a high-carb dinner can feed overnight liver glucose production (gluconeogenesis), pushing your morning fasting above the <5.3 mmol/L (<95 mg/dL) target.

Week-by-Week Reality: Why Week 34 Is Your Target
The title of this article says "by week 34" for a reason. Between weeks 28 and 34, insulin resistance climbs steadily. A plate that works at week 28 may fail at week 32. Here's what to expect:
